In the short novel “The Devil’s Tail,” Verga describes le 'ntuppatedde – women, who during the feast days of St. Agatha, went around with their faces covered, leaving only one eye showing. They wore refined dress and wrapped themselves in a cloak; thus unrecognizable, the woman became “her own master and master of the streets, of the meeting places…” and she was able to play tricks on friends and relatives that she met along the way. It was during the feast of St. Agatha that the particular event between the story’s two protagonists, Lina and Donati, occurred. The two were joined by a profound friendship and Donati recognized Lina by the bracelet she wore, even though she was covered from head to toe. When he saw her, he admitted that he had dreamed about her, and Lina confessed that she was in love with him. From this moment on, their friendship was interrupted. They didn’t see each other again until next year’s feast of St. Agatha but this time it was Lina that made herself known to Donati.
